Communication Function Classification System

== The CFCS ==

The Communication Function Classification System (CFCS) for individuals with cerebral palsy (CP) is a five-level classification system which began development at Michigan State University〔Hidecker, M.J.C., Paneth, N., Rosenbaum, P.L., Kent, R.D., Lillie, J., Eulenberg, J.B., Chester, K., Johnson, B., Michalsen, L., Evatt, M., & Taylor, K. (2011). Developing and validating the Communication Function Classification System (CFCS) for individuals with cerebral palsy, Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology, 53(8), 704-710. doi: 10.1111/j.1469-8749.2011.03996.x PMC3130799〕 and currently under further refinement at the University of Wyoming.
The research, organized and conducted by Dr. Mary Jo Cooley Hidecker, Ph.D., CCC-A/SLP, follows two widely used classification systems for cerebral palsy: the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) 〔Palisano R, Rosenbaum P, Walter S, et al. Development and reliability of a system to classify gross motor function in children with cerebral palsy. Dev Med Child Neurol. 1997; 39: 214-223.〕〔Morris C, Bartlett D. Gross Motor Function Classification System: Impact and utility. Dev Med Child Neurol 2004;46(1):60-5.〕〔Palisano RJ, Rosenbaum P, Bartlett D, Livingston MH. Content Validity of the Expanded and Revised Gross Motor Function Classification System. Dev Med Child Neurol. 2008; 50(10): 744-750.〕 and the Manual Abilities Classification System (MACS).〔Eliasson A, Krumlinde-Sundholm L, Rösblad B, et al. The Manual Ability Classification System (MACS) for children with cerebral palsy: scale development and evidence of validity and reliability. Dev Med Child Neurol 2006;48:549-554.〕 Dr. Ray Kent of the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Dr. Peter Rosenbaum of McMaster University, and Dr. Nigel Paneth of Michigan State University are also an integral part of this research.
